Monday, July 5th 1993: Afton, WY to Jackson Hole, WY or ... Out of the window of support!

At 5:15 am some are already packing up their gear. I let my boss sleep till 6 am. That should give her plenty of time to get ready.

Wow, we are getting breakfast this morning. The buffet at the restaurant is good, but my boss does not touch the pancakes. "They don't go well when I have to climb", she explains to me. Friend Sue doesn't feel like eating breakfast at all...

My woman is dressed for cold weather and rain. On a leisurely pace we cycle in the Salt River Valley. We are lucky to find two license plates: one for Sue and one for my boss!

The low clouds seem to be splitting the mountains in two parts. The dark grey blends in beautifully with the green.

In Alpine Junction we make a right turn, following the Snake River upstreams now.

My boss finds the traffic rather busy through this canyon: lots of trucks and RV's.

Halfway at the aid station my boss packs some bags with sandwiches and cookies. The sun is trying to peek through the massive clouds. Time to cycle in shorts!

We often stop to watch the rubber boats on the Snake float by.

Later - at mile 50 - it rained again. On with the rain gear - even the feet go into some plastic boots! And now it's rather fun to be cycling in the rain. We meet up with Sue and Deb again. The last one has only two cranks on her bicycle, making it harder to spin.

In Hoback Junction we stop at this convenience store for a dup of coffee. Suddenly, one of the staff members comes in. He tells us that we are now "Out of the window of support"... which is actually a nice way to say "You're too slow and you are now on your own to get to the destination." My boss doesn't think much of this, but the other women argue that this isn't done (after all we pay for this trip). We decide not to scratch our names on the list. Yeah - each time you arrive at the camp, the company asks us to scratch your name - making it easy for them to check if they have lost someone or not.

Later on, staff member Jackie does come back to check upon us. We arrive in Jackson Hole at 2:15 pm. "Well done, boss. I don't think this is too late to arrive!"

Jackson Middle School has a wonderful sport accommodation: two gyms! Sue and my boss decide to sleep inside again - in the hallway between the two gyms.

My woman is a bit bored in the afternoon - she's waiting for a shuttle to take her to town. Dinner is in Anthony's: spaghetti - lots of it and nice tasting!

At 7:15 pm we join the meeting outside at the Rancher. We get the evening free in town - a shuttle we pick us up at 10:30 pm.

So we have plenty of time to stroll around this touristy town. Unfortunately - at 9 pm a big rainstorm with hail and snow hits the town.

At 10 pm the shops close - we now have to wait till the van comes over to pick us up.

My boss still doesn't know all the names of the staff members.
